Lead Summer Day Camp Counselors (Outdoors)

Description
Work with elementary aged youth in an outdoor camp setting, leading activities that are safe, fun and appropriate to the campers' age and abilities.


Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in opening and closing camp for the summer season.
  • Effectively communicate with parents, campers, co-workers and supervisor(s).
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service.
  • Follow all City, KDHE and camp policies and procedures.
  • Follow basic supervisory responsibilities:
  • Participate with campers in group and individual activities.
  • Enforce safety rules.
  • Stay with and interact with campers at all times.
  • Intervene when campers are likely to injure themselves or others.
  • Prepare, set-up and clean-up activities.
  • Assist campers with self-selected activities.
  • Assist with preparing, serving and cleaning up snacks.
  • Receive the appropriate training if necessary:
  • Child abuse and neglect awareness.
  • Signs and symptoms of illness.
  • Olathe seasonal employee training.

Experience:  Lead counselors must be 18 years of age or older with a minimum of 1 year experience of working with participants of similar ages and abilities for the program. Working experience in a camp setting is preferred.

Education:  Lead counselors must have a High School diploma or GED. Some college course work relating to child development or education is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:  Applicants must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
First Aid and CPR Certification or the ability to obtain certification prior to the start of camp is required.


Hours of Operation  are Monday - Friday between 7:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M.. Camp staff will work 40 hours per week if full-time and 20 hours per week if part-time during the 11 weeks of the season (May 24 - August 6). Note: Most lead counselor positions are full-time. If interested in part-time duties please consider the assistant counselor position.
Training/meetings prior to the opening of the camp season (May 24), will be held evenings and weekends and are required.
