Renewable Energy Analytical Instrumentation Engineering Project Intern

Elemental Scientific is seeking self-motivated and team-oriented students to join the development team in Omaha, Nebraska responsible for creating new analytical instrumentation for solar energy process monitoring and improvement.

This is an opportunity to develop skills in project planning and management, data collection and analysis, quality control, teamwork and communication.
Elemental Scientific is looking to build a team that includes the following:

  • Programmer/Firmware/Software Engineer
  • Analytical Chemist

Students should be interested in learning about and developing analytical instruments which will improve alternative energy efficiency.  
She/he should be someone who applies science and mathematics to technical problems and is excited to develop new products for ICPMS customers. She/he is willing to conduct quantitative and qualitative experiments that will monitor solar energy processes; specifically related to inorganic compounds analyzed by an ICP-OES/ ICPMS. She/he is capable of developing applications and methods to meet the needs of customers monitoring solar energy. She/he will work with the team to identify the purpose, performance requirements and security of the software, among other important features. Then, she/he will collaborate to write, test, revise and launch the software.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:
If applying as a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer, duties and responsibilities include:
  • Making plans using detailed drawings
  • Preparing estimates and budgets
  • Creating accurate project specifications
  • Designing engineering experiments
  • Creating technical reports
  • Completing regulatory documents concerning safety issues
  • Finishing projects on time and within budget
  • Communicating with coworkers about analysis results

If applying as an Analytical Chemist, duties and responsibilities include:
  • Preparing compounds, test solutions and reagents to conduct tests and experiments, then advising and coordinating on test procedures
  • Determining the relationships of chemical and physical properties, composition, structures and reactions of organic and inorganic compounds using chromatography, spectrophotometry and spectroscopy techniques
  • Developing, improving and customizing equipment, products, formulas, analytical methods and processes
  • Consulting with engineers and other chemists on analysis, interpretation and development of tests
  • Documenting findings in technical papers and reports, preparing specifications and testing standards

If applying as a Programmer or Software Engineer, duties and responsibilities include:
  • Analyzing the needs of the user
  • Designing, testing and developing the software to meet those needs
  • Recommending upgrades for existing systems and programs
  • Developing separate elements of a software that work well in the program as a whole
  • Creating various diagrams, flowcharts and models that illustrate the type of code needed
  • Ensuring continued functionality of a program during maintenance and testing of software
  • Documenting each aspect of a system or application as a reference for future upgrades and maintenance
  • Revisiting the development process to fix bugs or address concerns

Requirements
Applicants must be working towards earning a bachelor’s degree of engineering or of science.
