CDC Medical Writing on Biopreparedness Fellowship

An opportunity is currently available in the Bacterial Special Pathogens Branch (BSPB), Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP) at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The BSPB mission is to prevent illness, disability, or death caused by bacterial zoonotic diseases or unusual bacterial pathogens in the United States and around the world.
The participant will gain experience in the BSPB serving on the Epi Team and be mentored by a Medical Officer/Epidemiologist while achieving the following objectives:
- Provide research support with editing, writing, formatting, and version control for peer-reviewed articles including text, tables, figures, and references for a high-level journal supplement (Clinical Infectious Diseases) devoted to anthrax. The journal issue will focus on preparations for a mass casualty attack and drug resistance. These articles will comprise the "evidence base" for an update of federal postexposure prophylaxis and treatment recommendations for anthrax. Most of the articles are systematic reviews.
- Collaborates, with co-authors, peer review, and the journal editors prior to publication. Ensures the adherence to strict timetables for internal clearance, peer review, and publishing.
- Abstracts pertinent case information from a current database of 950+ cases, clean and analyze the data, and prepare a journal manuscript on an anthrax topic of their choosing
- Interpret data and summarize articles
The participant will also have the opportunity to collaborate with epidemiologists, medical professionals, and microbiologists.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
