Grossing/Histology Technician - Joplin, MO

Position Summary/Objective:
This position will handle small amounts of both the grossing technician and histology technician positions. The Grossing Technician is responsible for performing all technical aspects of receiving, accessioning, dissecting and dictating surgical specimens within their achieved competency level. Individuals must expand their knowledge of the disease process in order to master specimens of increasing complexity. Responsible for ensuring quality, consistency, and efficiency of specimens. The Histology Technologist will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from surgical or diagnostic cases are sorted, logged and prioritized according to the standards required.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Retrieves and/or receives specimens
  2. Sorts specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and records in the Pathology log
  3. Emends specimens into blocks
  4. Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections and staining of slides
  5. Prepares solutions, stains and reagents in accordance with written procedures
  6. Operates and maintains all histology lab equipment in proper state of readiness and cleanliness
  7. Records number of tissue blocks verifying proper identification and label
  8. Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment and reagents used; places orders for replacements as required
  9. Assists the Pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section procedures
  10. Maintains that quality tissue specimen slides and stain results are obtained and delivered to the Pathologist within established quality standards
  11. Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures. Maintains proficiency and competency in performance for the testing menu of the division or section.
  12. Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure. Coordinates review and revision of the Laboratory Safety Procedures
  13. Receive and verify patient information on all paperwork & specimen containers for accuracy.
  14. Accurately accessions all cases into the appropriate Laboratory Information Systems, prints bar-coded tissue cassettes, updates and edits histology trim sheet in Laboratory Information Systems, prepares specimens for send-out testing.
  15. Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating surgical specimens using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment (scalpels, paddle razors, bone saw, cryostat, etc.).
  16. Maintains cassettes accuracy, slide filing, laboratory records, pathology equipment and logs, and assists with frozen section procedures.
  17. Communicates with pathologist, peers, internal and external clients.
  18. Assists with supply ordering and inventory.
  19. Maintains cleanliness of gross room.
  20. Maintains supplies and overall cleanliness of gross room.
  21. Assist in the tissue processing area.
  22. Assist in the pathology reception area.
  23. Label chemical waste barrels and appropriately discard chemical waste in accordance with all local, State, and federal guidelines.
  24. Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) Reviews.
  25. Assist with laboratory accreditation inspection preparations.
  26. Must work the hours required for each specific location.
  27. Must observe and follow all rules, requirements, and regulations.
  28. Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree with 2+ years related experience
               OR
  • Associate's degree (60 credit hrs. in science or biology) with 4+ years related experience
  • Technologist level certification from the (ASCP) American Society of Clinical Pathologist is required
  • HTL certified with 4+ years recent related experience preferred
  • HT certified with 6+ years recent related experience required
Experience / Abilities:
  • Spatial ability is required to perceive three-dimensional and geometric relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and making embedding molds
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate the micro-thin tissue sections and to mount onto microscopic slides
  • Color discrimination required to verify diagnostic quality of staining processes in order that essential features of tissue sections can be properly defined
  • Requires thorough understanding off all aspects of the Histology area
  • Demonstrates a high degree of integrity
