CDC STD Epidemiology and Statistics Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Statistics Team within the Epidemiology and Statistics Branch (ESB) of the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
DSTDP’s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications. The mission of ESB is to quantify risks for STDs and to inform the development and implementation of interventions to ameliorate these risks. The Statistics Team in ESB supports DSTDP activities through the application of rigorous statistical approaches to the design of STD analyses and studies.
Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may have the opportunity to learn about data management and data analysis methods using population surveillance data; data analysis, management, and visualization; and the development and implementation of statistical methods to inform STD prevention and intervention. The participant may be involved in analyses of nationally representative surveys (e.g., NHANES, NSFG, NAMCS) as well as large administrative data sets (e.g., Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicaid MAX data and IBM MarketScan data).
Learning Objectives: Possible learning opportunities include assisting with:
- Determining and defining rigorous research questions and analytic plans. Developing and managing data analysis plans, as well as data documentation, data management procedures, reports, and analysis
- Developing SAS and R programs to conduct data analyses, data management, and data visualizations
- Collaborating with Division scientists on the development and implementation of statistical methods

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Spring 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
