Assistant Physicist for Synchrotron Instrumentation Control and Machine

Organizational Overview
The Nonproliferation and National Security Department (NN) contributes to U.S. nuclear security and safeguards efforts by assisting in the development, analysis and assessment of policies that strengthen international regimes, collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and threats to the U.S. and international communities, developing and implementing new technologies to address existing and emerging threats, and strengthening the domestic and international institutions that form the framework of the nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security regimes through training and engagement. 
Within NN, the Data-driven Intelligence and Security group aids national security interests by creating techniques that incorporate computer science, data science, cyber security technologies, and intelligence analysis.
Position Description
The Data-driven Intelligence and Security Group is seeking a 2-year term Physicist with computational and programming skills to work in a team to support the development of solutions to national security problems with technology, algorithms and machine learning. The incumbent will also collaborate with the Radiation Detection and Emerging Safeguards Technologies Group in the development of detector and security systems for international safeguard applications. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepare proposals seeking funding from federal and non-federal agencies, by contributing to others’ proposals and by preparing independent proposals
  • Lead projects as funded or assigned
  • Develop algorithms with machine learning capabilities to operate detectors and other instrumentation, collect and analyze data, and report results
  • Be an emerging leader in the design, development, and implementation of innovative projects designed to improve the technical aspects of safeguards and national security technologies
  • Support existing programs in international nuclear safeguards, university outreach, and homeland security
  • Support programs in the design, development, and implementation of equipment testing for field implementation and data collection for the Department of Homeland Security
  • Write interim and final project reports and presentations
  • Publish results of research and development in peer-reviewed, scientific journals
Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A PhD in one of the following: physics, electrical engineering or relevant fields
  • Experience with Python programing and in machine learning
  • Experience with detectors and detector instrumentation
  • Experience with synchrotron beamline instrumentation
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor for instrument and/or circuitry design
  • Experience in computer system architecture
  • Demonstrated detector instrumentation system design and construction expertise
  • Excellent interpersonal and clear and concise communication skills
  • Understanding of policy pertaining to international nuclear safeguards and national security
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally as required for project work and laboratory representation
  • Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to present information and ideas on technical issues to diverse groups (international, non-scientist, and scientist populations)
  • Must be able to obtain a DOE “Q” clearance
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of the International Atomic Energy Agency's inspection and verification efforts
  • Understanding of DOE/NNSA's NA-24 support of IAEA initiatives and technology development efforts


Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass Radworker training requirements and be willing to work in a radiation environment

  • The candidate chosen would be hired for an initial 2-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding
