Postdoctoral Research Associate Near-Field Infrared Nanospectroscopy

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
Organizational Overview
Led by Brookhaven Lab, the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA) is one of five National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Centers awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct basic research in QIS. Comprising more than 20 national labs, research centers, universities, and industry, the C2QA team aims to overcome the performance limitations of current-generation quantum computers by targeting three research thrusts: software and algorithms, devices, and materials. Within the materials thrust, new spectroscopy tools and probes are being developed at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. These cutting-edge research tools will help accelerate the optimization and exploration of materials for QIS applications.
Position Description
The holder of this position will contribute to the development, commissioning, and operation of AFM-based near-field infrared (NFIR) nanospectroscopy instruments, operating both at room and cryogenic temperatures, and capable of spanning a broad spectral range using NSLS-II as a high-brightness synchrotron infrared source. These instruments are intended to serve the quantum materials and QIS communities. The position project is a direct collaboration with NFIR experts at Stony Brook University and Columbia University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate in the setup, commissioning, and operation of NFIR instruments.
  • Contribute to the fabrication of a unique cryogenic NFIR instrument.
  • Carry out research in the field of quantum materials to investigate the low-temperature properties of systems such as chiral magnetic materials, strongly correlated electron systems, and two-dimensional materials using NFIR.
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • PhD in an experimental physical science or related engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly present results in scientific papers and seminars
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional team environment
  • Good scientific writing and oral presentation abilities, and publication experience
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with cryogenic instrumentation and scanning probes, and NFIR in particular
  • Knowledge of FTIR spectroscopic methods
  • Familiarity with synchrotron infrared instrumentation
  • Familiarity with tunable infrared laser sources
  • Experience using and developing scientific computing tools for data acquisition and analysis
