Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard is now accepting applications for a year-round Agriculture Assistant Manager to be part of the Agriculture Team. Located in Gretna, Nebraska, Vala’s is a fall festival open to the public 45 to 55 days a year and a treasured fall tradition for many families in the surrounding communities. Vala’s is a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, spanning 400+ acres and including over 50 attractions, like pick-your-own pumpkins and apples, and over 25 specialty food locations. As the Agriculture Assistant Manager you will work under the direction of the Agriculture and Orchard Manager and owners. This position will plan and help with the production and care of the landscape, containers, and cut flower garden areas throughout the farm. Knowledge of planting and bed preparation, irrigation, weed control, soil amendments and nutrition, pest identification, and annual and perennial identification is a plus. The Agriculture Assistant Manager will learn from and work alongside the Agriculture and Orchard Manager in the planting, maintaining, and growing of pumpkins and apple trees in our fields and orchards while contributing to a fast paced, family friendly, unique environment. The Agriculture Assistant Manager is an hourly, full-time, year-round position. The hours for this position vary with the majority of hours in the spring, summer, and fall months. The pay rate is determined based upon the education and experience of the candidate.
Responsibilities
- Work under the direction of owners and Agriculture Management to maintain the cut flower garden and landscaped space throughout the public areas of the farm
- Work with Agriculture Manager to learn about growing apples and pumpkins
- Plan and implement irrigation for the flower bed areas
- Assist in weeding, fertilization, irrigation, and planting flower beds
- Work with management on production and creation of bouquets for retail spaces
- Arrange flowers in containers for retail sales in the fall
- Other landscaping duties that apply
Requirements
- Having a degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, Landscape, Fruit Production or other related field and related work experience a plus
- Must obtain pesticide applicators license within six months of hire
- This job requires being outside, being on your feet, walking short and long distances
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Plant and landscape knowledge a plus
- Manage time effectively with limited supervision
- Must learn to operate equipment (training provided)
