McMullan Arts Leadership Internship, Publishing & Interpretation (Summer 2021)

This internship offers the opportunity to gain experience in and knowledge of the fields of museum publishing, interpretation, and art museum work more broadly. In the department of Publishing, the intern will learn about the rigorous, multifaceted interpretive planning and editorial processes that inform the formation of rotations and exhibitions, and the creation of the Art Institute’s printed and digital publications, from gallery labels to exhibition and collection catalogues.
The intern will work closely with the Editorial Director and Director of Interpretation and other editorial and interpretation staff on various projects. Due to the cross-institutional nature of our work, the intern will also have the opportunity to collaborate with curators; project managers; imaging and production staff; freelancers (including indexers, designers, proofreaders, and translators); and other personnel. Depending on previous editorial experience, the intern may have the opportunity to assist with one or more of our editorial projects and contribute to interpretive strategic initiatives focused on language access and storytelling in the galleries.
INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES
  • Research and develop interpretive solutions related to specific areas of the collections.
  • Assist in audience evaluations of interpretive texts and contribute to interpretive initiatives that will impact visitors’ experiences in the museum.
  • Gain an understanding of strategies related to writing for museum audiences.
  • Gain an overview of museum publishing, in particular the editorial stages of print and digital publications.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research approaches to accessible language in museum didactics.
  • Participate in the assessment of permanent collection didatics, evaluating gallery texts with an eye toward accessible and inclusive content.
  • Assist editors on print and digital publications, such as editing manuscript and proofreading design layouts.
  • Assist in editing museum didactics, including labels, text panels, time lines, etc.
About the McMullan Arts Leadership Internship:
The McMullan Arts Leadership Internship program is part of a museum-wide effort to provide students from diverse backgrounds, including those underrepresented in the museum field, the opportunity to gain experience, career awareness, networks, and skills that will together position them to succeed as future art museum leaders. Those selected join an intern cohort and have access to a range of programs to support their development in addition to their specific departmental placement. Mentorship is provided throughout the intern experience. Interns are also encouraged to remain connected to the museum and to other interns as part of an alumni network.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in the Chicago metropolitan area; recent graduates (within one year of graduation) will also be considered.
  • We seek motivated and committed individuals who are genuinely interested in a career in museum interpretation and/or publishing.
  • Excellent analytical, editorial, grammar, and writing skills are important, as is an interest in art history or a related discipline.
  • Experience in an editorial and/or publishing setting is helpful but not required.
  • Familiarity with a writing style guide, such as the Chicago Manual of Style is valued but not essential.
  • Familiarity with book design and editing software (such as InDesign) is valued but not essential.
