Lead Student Supervisor, Wild Rose Gift Shop

About This Job:

Working directly with the Retail Manager for Volunteer Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC), the Lead Student Supervisors provide operational, customer service, and managerial support at both the Wild Rose Gifts and Kaleidoscope Gift Shop locations. A Lead Student Supervisor is responsible for assisting in coordinating and supervising the student sales staff and volunteers, while actively participating in inventory management, superior customer service, and providing a clean and welcoming environment to our customers. As part of one of the leading healthcare systems in Iowa, this position plays a vital role in in helping to support the patient and family experience. 

Job duties include:

Leadership/Mentoring
  • Supports positive staff relationships with all departments, management, sales associates, and volunteers.
  • Upholds the objectives, policy and procedures and tasks given to them by management.
  • Ability to delegate and ensure tasks get completed in a timely manner by utilizing and maximizing employee productivity. 
  • Assists in supervising the student sales associates and volunteers during assigned shifts.
  • Assist in the training and developing of the student sales associates and volunteers.
  • Provide operational support and guidance to the student sales associates and volunteers.
  • Ensure team follows standard operating procedures for all operational and customer service functions.

Operational Management
  • Responsible for the handling of cash, receipts, gift cards, checks and other pertinent daily business transactions, including the opening and closing of store locations.
  • Ability to work seamlessly in any location, any shift, and at special events.
  • Responsible for protecting the assets and security of the store.
  • Assist in developing or updating standard operating procedures for all business operational activities.
  • Assist departmental and area supervisory personnel during peak business periods or assumes duties in the event of their absence. 
  • Functions as a store liaison with UIHC weekend/night personnel in the event of an emergency, or when requiring maintenance or custodial assistance. 

Rate of Pay:
  • $13.50/hour starting hourly wage, with potential for increases based on job performance and longevity.

Work Schedule: 
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 12 hours per week
  • Shifts available Monday thru Friday, 7am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday, 9:30am to 6:30pm.
  • Availability during academic breaks preferred.
  • Availability during some nights and weekends preferred.
  • Two semester commitment preferred.

Qualifications:
  • Customer service experience required.
  • Retail experience required.
  • Staff supervisory experience, or demonstrated aptitude for supervision.
  • Availability during academic breaks preferred.
  • Availability during some nights and weekends preferred.
  • Two semester commitment preferred.
  • Ability to multitask, delegate and follow direction.
  • Self-reliance to exercise the independent judgment necessary to function autonomously (without immediate supervision).
  • Ability to work efficiently, effectively, and considerately with other managers.  
  • Business casual dress, with UIHC Professional Appearance standards.
  • Must be a UI registered student with no record of any student misconduct – disciplinary or academic

Background checks (criminal history, child/dependent adult sexual abuse) will be conducted on final candidates for all positions in UI Hospitals & Clinics.

Because this is a patient care environment, all new student employees must complete a pre-employment health screening and 2 tuberculin (TB) skin tests in the University Employee Health Clinic.
