Research Technician I - Geballe Lab

The Geballe Laboratory studies the roles, mechanisms and evolution of antagonism of host cell defenses during infections by large DNA viruses, especially herpesviruses and vaccinia virus. Additional project focus on control of gene expression at the translational level.
 
The Research Technician works under the direction of the Principal Investigator or higher-level laboratory personnel. The ideal candidate uses discretion and judgment in performance of duties. The work will require working with viruses, including herpesviruses, in cell culture and molecular and cell biological methods to dissect interactions of host cellular defenses and viruses and to investigate translational control mechanisms used by DNA and RNA viruses.


Responsibilities

The Research Technician is responsible for performing standard investigative laboratory experiment work in support of scientific research in virology, virus evolution, and virus-host cell interactions. The job will entail performing experiments, operating analytical instruments, compiling and verifying the accuracy of research data, performing calculations, preparing charts, graphs, summaries and presentations.
  • Conduct molecular biological and virological experiment under direction of higher-level personnel
  • Maintain clear and accurate laboratory notebooks documenting experimental details and results
  • Participate in lab research meetings, including presenting to small groups of scientists
  • Assist in publication of results by proofreading and editing
  • May manage research data bases
  • Assist in general laboratory duties


Qualifications

Self-motivated, curious candidates who are eager to learn and contribute, with excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, and those who work well in a multidisciplinary team environment are encouraged to apply. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in a biological science and some research experience. To be successful in this position, the technician must be highly motivated, take a high level of initiative, work carefully, and keep detailed accurate records. They must also be capable of working independently and with other team members and have excellent interpersonal skills.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS in a relevant scientific field required
  • Must have scientific knowledge of molecular and cellular biology and virology
  • Must have some experience in molecular biology, cell culture and/or microbiology in a laboratory setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and training in virology
  • Comfort with math, statistics, and common molecular biology software
  • Cell culture experience
