Transportation Manager

The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing all transportation operations for the DC and its delivery service area including local dedicated drivers, line haul, local long haul (final-mile) performance, LTL and Parcel, routing, and clerical staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Responsible for financial and operational performance of all DC transportation operations, primarily local dedicated fleet, line haul, and final-mile carriers, but including LTL and Parcel.
  • Set and communicate service expectations for fleet and carriers. Hold carriers and dedicated provider accountable through regular reviews and continual improvement initiatives.
  • Create and track KPIs including productivity, on-time and scanning performance.
  • Develop and implement continual improvement projects to drive cost and service improvements and efficiencies.
  • Select, train and develop an effective and efficient transportation and driving staff.
  • Establish and communicate performance metrics, standards and objectives; conducts performance reviews.
  • Recommend salary adjustments, promotions, transfers, disciplinary action, dismissals and terminations.
  • Cross train staff to maximize productivity and provide coverage of all functions.
  • Review & maintain all required DOT files and logs including completion of Driver Qualification files and Hours of Service logs & DVIR's.
  • Establish & maintain emergency backup (contingency) plans to ensure service standards are achieved on a daily basis.
  • Effectively manage routing system and processes in collaboration with the DC (Roadshow).
  • Communicate with sales staff, customer service staff, and carriers to ensure proper operational procedures are followed and resolve service issues. Implement ‘root cause’ practices to eliminate future issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
External Qualifications
Required: Bachelors Degree with at least 3 years combined experience working in distribution, fleet operations, and team management OR High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 7 years transportation experience required with a minimum of 2 years in distribution, 2 years working with fleet operations (private or dedicated), and 2 years of experience managing a team. Business communication and collaboration skills. Ability to handle multiple projects at one time dealing with drivers in both local and long haul markets. Analytical skill set and experience reviewing financial and operational metrics. Understanding of U.S. Department of Transportation rules and regulations. Ability to lift 50 lbs or more when necessary. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically in Word, Excel & Powerpoint.

Preferred: Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMSs), routing generation and optimization, and mobile tracking / delivery platforms preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Union environment experience & bi-lingual, English/Spanish helpful.
