Research Technician II - III

A full-time Research Technician II/III position is available in the Hatch Lab in the Basic Sciences Division. We study the structure and dynamics of the mammalian nuclear envelope, and our primary interests are to understand why and how nuclear membranes rupture and repair, and how defects in nuclear membrane stability impact cancer development (Hatch et al., Cell, 2013; Maciejowski and Hatch, Ann Rev Cell Dev Biol, 2020; Young, Gunn, and Hatch, MBoC, 2020). The Hatch lab uses a variety of techniques to achieve these goals with a focus on microscopy and cell-based tool development.


Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Dr. Hatch and other senior lab members to design and execute experiments related to scientific goals defined by them.
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and reporting experimental results on a shared lab database as well as in group meetings and at local conferences.
  • Consulting and working with experts outside of the lab
  • Independent learning about how different techniques work to identify optimization parameters.
  • General lab maintenance duties, including checking and maintaining lab stocks, checking and replenishing supplies
  • Maintaining lab records
  • Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays
  • Perform other duties as required


Qualifications

  • Proven ability to independently develop protocols for new techniques, including a motivation to read and synthesize current literature in the field, constant assessment of conditions while executing an experiment
  • Excellent record keeping, a basic understanding of experimental design, and an ability to define the next steps in an experiment.
  • Interest or ability in discussing data, asking questions in a group setting, and asking for help or training are key skills for success. 

Research Technician II
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 2 years previous experience working in a laboratory. 
  • Independent research experience outside of laboratory course work is usually necessary.

Research Technician III
  • Extensive experience in a laboratory. Generally, the incumbent will possess a Masters’ degree in a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years previous experience working in a laboratory
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Experience with tissue culture and microscopy is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with basic statistical tests, including chi-square analysis, and one-way anova’s, is preferred
  • Experience with immunological labeling techniques, including western blotting, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence, is preferred
