FDA Postgraduate Research Fellowship in Antimicrobial Resistance

An opportunity is available at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, Division of Animal and Food Microbiology located in Laurel, Maryland.

The overall goal of the project is to characterize and describe the distribution and spread of antimicrobial resistance bacterial strains and their determinants. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will use molecular microbiological information to describe and/or predict spatial and temporal patterns of specific antimicrobial resistant strains within the One Health framework using computational and epidemiological models. During the project the participant will be trained on literature review, experimental design, and scientific writing. The participant will have the opportunity to learn about antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and cutting edge technologies such as whole genome sequencing and metagenomics. The participant will be encouraged to make a research presentation at internal and external meetings and publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 2021

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in the Laurel, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
