Instructional Designer - Harvard Humanitarian Initiative/BWH

The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) is an affiliated program within the International Division of the Brigham Health Department of Emergency Medicine and is the primary humanitarian outreach arm of Harvard University. The mission of HHI is to conduct research and education on the practice of relieving human suffering in war and disaster by advancing the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide. This position reports to the Chair of Emergency Medicine and under the guidance of Harvard Humanitarian Initiative’s (HHI) Executive Director. 

HHI is looking for an Instructional Designer for HHI’s educational programs and online learning activities, such as the Harvard Humanitarian Academy, Executive Negotiation Project (ENP), Building a Better Response (BBR), HHI Learning Management System (LMS), and others. The Instructional Designer will serve as a technical expert to design and develop HHI’s online learning programs, create and implement instructor-led, computer-based, and virtual training modules and courses using innovative technology and learning solutions. The Instructional Designer will be part of the HHI operations team and will work closely with respective principal investigators and project leads who will supervise and guide the instructional design activities. The Instructional Designer will be encouraged to research ways to improve HHI’s education and online learning programs, implement new instructional design approaches, examine similar programs by other organizations, and explore grant opportunities that could support growth. The successful Instructional Designer will have experience in adult learning theory with an in-depth understanding of instructional design and online learning principles, strategies, technologies, and program development, with an eye towards fair use policy and international accessibility.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Design experiential online and hybrid learning experiences appropriate for adult professional learners
  2. Work closely with subject matter experts to craft, revise, and maintain training and additional learning content
  3. Collaborate with all HHI staff and faculty on curriculum development and instructional design needs
  4. Oversee instructional design and content development activities
  5. Develop, in collaboration with project teams, learning objectives, assessment questions that demonstrate knowledge, and assist with question development and updating
  6. Participate in monitoring and evaluation planning for education programs and online learning
  7. Design, develop, and maintain classroom, virtual classroom, and self-paced training content
  8. Provide technical support on individual learning modules, the HHI Learning Management System, or for the virtual classroom as needed
  9. Consult in development of assessment instruments to measure efficacy of learning content and curriculum in meeting program goals.
  10. Spearhead review of all online course content and prepare new course scripts to optimize learner experience
  11. Research and script online videos
  12. Evaluate text for outdated learning or sector policies on a short timeline, and confidently update sections with input from project teams
  13. Plan for an ongoing system of training review and user feedback; expansion of training to other venues, languages, and geographical regions; expansion of access to training via hand-held devices and remote access; and combining on-line training with simulations and field educational programs
  14. Oversee the effort of student interns related to HHI’s education and online learning programs
  15. Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s degree required
  2. Graduate degree in a relevant field preferred
  3. Three or more years as a lead content developer, or depth of experience as part of an Instructional Systems Design team, working on programming related to adult learning, executive education, and professional development
