Director of Nursing (Assisted Living)

This position is intended to work Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm.

The DON works in accordance with established policies and procedures and/or specific instructions from the Resident Services Director. This position is responsible for supervising the daily operation of an assisted living program which provides supportive services to residents. The DON directs employees providing services, responsible for achieving occupancy goals, regulatory compliance, and maintains effective working relationships with staff, residents and their families, and referral sources. 
 
Supervisory Responsibility: Train, supervise, and provide feedback on tasks performed by nursing staff in Assisted Living and Assisted Living Memory Care (Connections).
 
  • Assure the provision of quality services needed and/or desired by tenants, are consistent with the policies and procedures established by CGP.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with local, state and accrediting body standards. Maintain current knowledge of applicable Iowa State laws and regulations.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with representatives of government agencies responsible for surveying and inspecting the facility, and with the community health delivery system.
  • Provide ongoing support and supervision to staff to implement innovative program services to meet resident needs.
  • Maintain an active relationship with tenants through individual and group interaction, attending tenant functions and meetings, and support activity programs.
  • Strive to attain excellence in tenant satisfaction through ongoing solicitation and measurement of tenant /family feedback, implementation of suggestions.
  • Coordinate tenant service plans to communicate services to tenant and staff.
  • Audit charts regularly to ensure that accurate and pertinent documentation is completed. Ensure that the physician visits, orders, and certifications are up to date.
  • Coordinate and implement nurse delegation program per regulatory compliance.
  • Provide dementia training for staff and families, as needed.
  • Assist Resident Services Director to development budget, programming needs and monitors expenditures and revenue.
  • Interview and hire new staff and ensure they are orientated to the department.
  • Evaluate all nursing personnel in comparison to the standards of performance for their position setting realistic and challenging goals.

Required Qualifications:
  • Graduation from accredited Nursing program
  • Currently licensed RN (Registered Nurse) with the Iowa Board of Nursing.
  • Currently CPR certified.
  • Must meet licensing and/or qualification requirements of the state of Iowa laws and/or regulations.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of organizational or management experience supervising others.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in geriatric nursing and/or possesses a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Able to handle confidential information in an appropriate and discreet manner. Must act in accordance with Resident Bill of Rights.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background screen.  
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years nursing administration experience, preferably in assisted living.
  • Prior participation in professional organizations, dealing primarily in geriatrics.
  • Knowledge of employee management.
  • Knowledge of financial management.
  • Knowledge of the foundations of health laws.
 
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time for up to 90% of the work day.
  • Demonstrate physical dexterity in moving, bending, stooping and pulling for up to 75% of the work day.
  • Able to move promptly, especially in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty-one (51) pounds and assist in moving a resident.
  • Must be able to transport residents via wheelchair or shower chair, pushing up to 150 pounds, unassisted.
  • Must be able to transfer, lift, turn and position a resident weighing up to 125 pounds, unassisted, or with the assistance of one for a resident weighting over 125 pounds.
  • Resident-lifting tasks, the maximum recommended weight limit is thirty-five (35) pounds, but even less when the task is performed under less than ideal circumstances.
  • Must be able to wear protective gloves to guard against exposure to body fluids and cleaning agents.
  • Must be able to distinguish appropriate body fluids and food temperatures.
  • May be subject to offensive odors and combative behavior.
  • Requires manual coordination to operate computer and other business equipment such as fax machine, phone, copier and touchscreen monitor.
  • Normal vision and hearing required.
  • Must be able to function efficiently despite distractions and interruptions.
  • Communicates orally and/or in writing with residents, coworkers, families and public.
  • Possible contact with needles and other sharp objects.
  • Ability to use both hands and arms simultaneously.
