The position is directly responsible for providing longitudinal comprehensive care to oncology and hematology patients. It has primary responsibility for the coordination of care, patient and caregiver education, plan of care formulation and documentation, and nursing management of patients receiving care in the medical oncology clinic. This care management includes patient assessment, symptom management, and administration of parenteral fluids, chemotherapy agents, biologic therapy, and supportive care medicaDemonstrates a high level of understanding of oncology illnesses and treatment modalities.
 

This position is based at the new SCCA facility in Issaquah.


Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess baseline physical, emotional and social needs
  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient’s adaptation to illness on an ongoing basis
  • Demonstrates ability to conduct patient triage and assessment via the telephone and in person
  • Ability to develop a plan of care to respond to patient symptoms and reactions resulting from the disease or the treatment
  • Monitors patient response to therapies, including lab values and symptom assessment, in collaboration with the medical, nutrition and pharmacy staff
  • Uses effective problem solving skills in complex situations
  • Demonstrates capability to multitask with accuracy and deal effectively with unpredictable situations
  • Documents initial assessment accurately per assessment policy
  • Documents ongoing assessment accurately and per assessment policy
  • Documents patient education per policy
  • Documents all medications and treatments administered
  • Perform projects specific to department and other duties as assigned
  • Provides initial education and clinic orientation. Reviews patient resource manual with patient and family at arrival visit.
  • Participate in chemotherapy teaching with patients and caregivers
  • Participates in patient education regarding medications and therapies including home infusions
  • Participates in patient education regarding procedures including bone marrow aspirations and ommaya taps/intrathecal chemotherapy
  • Participates in patient education regarding symptom management
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current protocols related to the patient population with whom they work. Knows research resources and how to access.
  • Participates in committees and task forces to review and improve current standards
  • Able to collaborate effectively with physician to provide comprehensive care planning for their specific patient populations
  • Serves as resource in their area of expertise for other staff
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team situation 


Qualifications

  • Nursing Degree (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred)
  • Current Washington State nursing license
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
  • Critical thinking; the ability to practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledge
  • Ability to develop clinical judgment
  • Time Management skills; the ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively by looking and listening for cues, asking open-ended questions, exploring cues, using pauses, screening responses, and clarifying response.
  • Ability to effectively listen by using reflecting, acknowledging, summarizing, empathizing, and paraphrasing skill.
  • Ability to effectively provide information by checking what information the person knows already, giving small amounts of information at a time, using clear terms and avoiding jargon, avoiding detail unless it is requested, checking for understanding, and pausing and waiting for a response.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
