CDC Epidemiology Fellowship

Two research opportunities are currently available within the Influenza Division (ID), in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ID provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally.
The selected participant will provide support for the International Epidemiology and Research Team (IERT) within CDC's Influenza Division. IERT’s work includes public health evaluations and research activities to understand the dynamics of seasonal and novel influenza viruses, and to develop optimal strategies and programs for their prevention and control. Several key IERT activities require support such as project coordination, data management and analysis, and communications support. These include tracking and reporting of global data on seasonal influenza surveillance and avian influenza viruses, technical support for initiatives to introduce influenza vaccines among low- and middle-income countries, and other support to partner countries conducting influenza surveillance and research activities worldwide.
Opportunities for the participant may include:
- Data collection, management, and analysis of routine surveillance data and ad hoc reports on seasonal and avian influenza viruses for weekly summaries, as well as development of presentations and other reports to communicate findings
- Coordination and technical support for evaluations related to influenza vaccine program development in partner countries, including protocol development, implementation support, analysis, and report writing
- Development of tools and/or training materials for use by partners conducting influenza surveillance or vaccine program activities
- Data management, statistical analysis and report writing to summarize findings from cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies, which may include handling and merging large datasets with epidemiologic, laboratory, and electronic medical data
- Problem-solving to optimize data collection, data management, and data presentation
- Coordination of phase 4 clinical trials, prospective cohort studies, and other research projects
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 2021
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
