CDC Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers Epidemiology Fellowship

A research opportunity is currently available in the Viral Special Pathogens Branch (VSBP) within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The selected participant will be involved with the Epidemiology Team responsible for providing epidemic aid and conducting epidemiologic studies on the detection, prevention, and control of highly hazardous viral diseases to include and Hantavirus, Ebolavirus, Marburgvirus, Lassa fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, and other Arenaviruses. Under the guidance of the Epidemiology Team, the participant will learn about high-hazard viral disease epidemiology and prevention, participate in epidemiologic responses and studies, and interface with colleagues across CDC.
Specific learning opportunities may include:
- Participate in national and international surveillance through maintenance of the surveillance databases. Activities include data entry, data cleaning, quality assurance, identification of data errors, and coordinating with state public health departments and international partners to ensure complete and accurate reporting
- Analysis of databases for individual and collaborative projects
- Contribute to the development of health education and prevention programs for Hantavirus, Ebola, Lassa Fever, and other viral hemorrhagic fevers domestically and abroad
- Educate public and health professionals about the pathogens studied at the branch by participating in daily health education activities
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
