Collections Inventory Internship at Montauk Historic Site

Job Description
This is a non merit position with Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
This is an unpaid Internship.

Internship Purpose and Goals
  • Assist in a full artifact inventory at Montauk Historic Site located in Clermont, Iowa. This inventory will include researching objects, filling out condition reports, photographing objects, and updating object information into our database. 
  • This is an ongoing, large project. This internship will assist in starting the project and laying the groundwork for its continuation. 

Time Commitment
  • Duration: Summer Semester
  • Frequency: Minimum of 4 hours per week, unpaid.
  1. Hours are flexible. Staff is on site Monday-Friday 8:00-4:00 and Saturday-Sunday 12:00-4:00. Other times may be arranged as necessary. 

Duties and Essential Activities
  • Using existing database, compare information for objects and update as necessary.
  • Photograph objects as necessary
  • Complete inventory paperwork including condition reports 
  • Conduct research using Montauk Historic Site records and other reference material to provide maximum information about specific objects

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Pursuing a degree in history, museum studies, education or other related field 
  • Have an interest in museums and museum work.
  • Strong research and writing skills are expected.
  • Must conduct oneself in a mature/professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision.

Training
  • The selected intern will be trained in proper artifact handling.
  • The selected intern will be trained in how to access and utilize the records and photographs in the Montauk Collection as needed. 
  • A brief history of the home and family will be given to the selected intern. 

Department/Supervisor
  • The internship will be completed for Montauk Historic Site which is part of the Historic Sites bureau of the State Historical Society of Iowa. 
  • The internship will be supervised by the Montauk Historic Site Coordinator with overview from the Historic Sites Manager.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
