Public Health Epidemiologist

Position: Public Health Epidemiologist
Hourly Rate: $22.26 - $33.40

Position within the Municipal Services Department Health Division responsible for conducting investigations of reported suspected and confirmed cases of communicable diseases as received from health care providers, other health departments, and the general public. Interviews infected individuals in person and by telephone; gathers information and follows up to ensure the individual is aware of the conditions, symptoms, and examination and treatment. Educates affected individuals and persons exposed as to risk factors and prevention measures; documents activities of each visit. Processes biological, medical demographic, and epidemiological information. Completes and files required federal, state and county reports of suspected and confirmed cases; provides information regarding communicable disease control to health care providers, infected individuals, and the general public. Enters, updates, and analyzes data related to communicable diseases; retrieves data as needed. Conducts educational sessions on communicable diseases, epidemiology and emergency preparedness with community groups, businesses, agencies, organizations, and medical service providers and staff. Collects and transports specimens for epidemiological follow-up. Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Biology, Nursing, epidemiology or related field; with a minimum of one-year related work experience in public health preferred. Must have valid driver’s license. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of epidemiology, principles and practices of communicable disease control and community outreach strategies, and applicable state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations. Skilled in researching, compiling, and summarizing informational and statistical data and materials. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing. Physical Demands: Frequently required to stand for extended periods of time, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Typical Working Conditions: Frequent exposure to infectious or contagious diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions. Normal office environment.
