Elementary Counselors

  • Anticipated Locations:1.0 FTE assigned to Bennett Elementary and Centennial Elementary
  • 1.0 FTE assigned to Ed Clapp Elementary and Lewis & Clark Elementary
  • 1.0 FTE assigned to Madison Elementary
  • 1.0 FTE assigned to Washington Elementary

Position Purpose: To provide a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades K-12. To provide proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students to achieve success in school. School counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Communicates and collaborates with supervisors, colleagues, students, parents/guardians and community resources to meet the developmental needs of students
  • Promotes the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development through individual planning, small-group and classroom guidance
  • Provides responsive services to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns
  • Implements, manages and evaluates the Fargo Public Schools comprehensive counseling program
  • Participates on the building level crisis team and responds to individual/building/district crisis situations, when appropriate
  • Collaborates with administration to provide registration, orientation and transition activities for students new to the school
  • Facilitates educational programs for parents/guardians and students, as needed
  • Interprets cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests, as appropriate
  • Participates in building and district level meetings (i.e. MTSS, IEP, 504, SARB, PLC, etc), as needed
  • Continues professional development to increase awareness in best counseling practices
  • Implements program components to meet state mandated standards (interest inventories, testing interpretation, career conferencing/class, etc.), where required
  • Participate in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position as required by the district.

 
  • Minimum Qualifications:Master's degree in counseling or equivalent.
  • Valid ND school counseling credential from North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and appropriate licensure from ND Education Standards and Practices Board or ability to obtain prior to the start date; ability to license with a plan of study may be considered.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program;
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of schools, teachers, and classrooms.
  • Basic proficiency with instructional technology.

 
  • Preferred Qualifications:Experience working in a school setting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
