AmeriCorps Student Success Coach, St. Paul, MN

The NEED:
Despite a decades-old assumption that Minnesota is a national leader in education, young people in Minnesota are often up against many systemic barriers as they pursue graduation. These barriers disproportionately affect low-income students and students of color. Nearly 1 in 5 Minnesota high school students did not graduate on time in 2018. High School graduation is a milestone that ALL students deserve to achieve and is critical in setting young people up for successful futures. ALL students have great potential, but some become academically or socially disengaged due to a system that does not fully support them. As these young people become increasingly disconnected from their schools and communities, their risk of dropping out increases.
AmeriCorps Promise Fellows serve as caring adults who support, mentor, and build positive relationships with young people in 6-12th grade on their path to high school graduation. Fellows provide one-on-one and small group support to a group of students in a school or non-profit organization.
Fellows receive training in student-mentor relationship-building skills and goal-setting techniques. Fellows receive support and training throughout the year and are encouraged to explore their own goals and have the opportunity to be paired with a Life Coach. 20% of AmeriCorps Promise Fellows return for a second year of service.

You SERVE:
Promise Fellows serve students in 6th-12th grade. As an AmeriCorps member, you will provide direct support to up to 30 students in the areas of:
  • Attendance: Provide attendance coaching, call home if students miss class, and increase student attendance by creating a caring adult relationship.
  • Engagement: Provide avenues for increased youth engagement in school and the broader community by coordinating programs like lunchtime mentoring, book clubs, promoting youth leadership development, and connecting youth with civic opportunities.
  • Course Performance: Help students set academic goals and provide before, in, and after school educational support for individuals and small groups as students work towards their goals.

Promise Fellows are placed at a school or community-based organization during their term of service. There will be monthly opportunities to connect as a larger team with other AmeriCorps Promise Fellows. Service host sites are located in, though not limited to, Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro, St. Cloud, Northfield, and Duluth.

You EARN:
  • AmeriCorps Living Stipend: $717 twice per month
  • AmeriCorps Education Award: $6,345 Education Award upon successful completion of service. This award can be used toward federally qualifying student loans or future post-secondary education.
