The Villages Daily Sun, America’s fastest growing daily newspaper, is seeking reporters to define the high-end of what is possible in community journalism.
Local Government Reporter - This beat covers local government in one of the most civically active communities in America's stingiest swing state. The coverage area spreads across three counties, four cities and The Villages special district form of government. We're looking for an explanatory thinker who can deliver trend pieces and in-depth projects as well as official meeting coverage. This is a beat chronicling policy change in the nation's fastest growing metropolitan statistical area for the past decade - a community of 135,000 people that will double in size in the next 20 years.
Neighborhood Reporter - We are looking for a reporter who will be responsible for hyper-local coverage of a neighborhood of about 20,000 people as well as the businesses and wellness services operating within its boundaries.
Our newspaper is part of a media group that also produces a daily TV news show, operates an FM radio station and publishes a monthly magazine and niche special products to which our newsroom staff contributes.
Candidates need a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and familiarity with Central Florida is a plus. We prefer candidates with professional newsroom experience, however we have a strong track record of helping entry-level journalists take their work from good to great. The ideal candidates will be self-starters, have strong writing skills and be creative and flexible.
The Daily Sun is a community-first newsroom, not a digital-first newsroom. This means that we place high value on hyper-local content that is reported and edited at the local level, for a rapidly expanding print product. This is a rare opportunity to focus on journalistic quality without the distraction of a digital workflow.
We're about a 90-mile drive to the beach, the theme parks and the historic neighborhoods of Gainesville and St. Augustine. Our employees also have access to a highly regarded workplace charter school system in one of the state's most idyllic settings.
