ACE: Fisheries Planning Fellowship - USFWS Ecological Services, SW Region
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ecological Services in the Southwest Region is seeking 1 Fisheries Fellow to help with a diverse array of threatened and endangered species and habitat monitoring and Endangered Species Act responsibilities.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (NMESFO), located in Albuquerque, NM, is primarily responsible for conservation management activities including endangered and threatened species conservation, habitat conservation planning, energy development, permits and licenses through the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act compliance, pesticide use, water quality, hazardous waste and oil spill cleanup, Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration, wetland and riparian habitat assessments, and Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program. Employees work within the states of Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico (as well as other surrounding States).
The NMESFO is responsible for administering and implementing the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (Program). This intern will be working directly with the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (Program). The Program is a multi-agency, multi-Tribal, multi-State group to recover the Federally-listed endangered Razorback Sucker and Colorado Pikeminnow in the San Juan River Basin. The San Juan River is in the San Juan Basin in northwestern New Mexico, southern Utah, and southwestern Colorado. This individual will serve as a field liaison with various principle investigators by participating in fieldwork, as well as preparing, program planning, organizing meetings and workshops, analyzing data, preparing reports and assisting with education and outreach.

Compensation: The ACE Fellow will contribute ~40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $500/week paid out biweekly for food, housing, and incidental living expenses. Finding housing is the responsibility of the intern (ACE & USFWS will help provide local knowledge of rental market, where possible).
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 31.
Position Description:
Fisheries fellowship duties for the Program are anticipated to include:
- Assisting full-time staff, serving primarily in a support capacity
- Completing tasks related to information and data collection, acquisition, entry, organization, and management
- Organizing and facilitating meetings or workshops (in-person and remote)
- Processing of information into draft reports, tables, charts, maps, and planning products
- Drafting documents to support planning and the Endangered Species Act related to section 7 consultation, listing, and recovery.
- Participating with an Information and Education committee to develop and conduct outreach
- Coordinating with various principal investigators to support field activities or data needs and help ensure all procedures and products are satisfactorily addressed
Qualifications:
Required:
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- High School Diploma
- Individuals must be 21-30 to apply for any ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties.
- A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required (documentation to be provided upon request)
- Ability to work alone and in a group
- Ability to follow instructions, both written and verbal
- Proficient in English
- Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check
- Knowledge of natural sciences and a strong professional interest in fisheries
- Ability to work in an office setting and at a computer for extended periods
- Basic skills in scientific writing, data entry and management, and self-sufficiency and safety in a field setting.
Preferred:
- Pursuing or completion of a Master's degree, with a preference for a degree in a fisheries biology
- Experience accurately documenting, entering, and managing data and documents, using programs including MS Word and Excel, and ArcGIS
- Must be able to work and camp in both remote and aquatic surrounds (streams and rivers) for various lengths of time
- Must be able to swim
- Ability to manage and analyze spatial and non-spatial data using standard systems (MS excel, MS access, R, Mark)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ideal candidate is highly motivated, detail oriented, organized, and able to maintain a positive disposition even under adverse conditions.
- Ability to keep work organized and communicate orally to determine needs and follow procedures
- Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the USFWS and other federal land management agencies
The fellow must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
