Phlebotomist

Summary:
Reports to the Director, Laboratory Services and/or Medical Director. The Phlebotomist collects and processes patient specimens; orders tests in the laboratory information system; processes mail; communicates results and files reports. The Phlebotomist is the laboratory's ambassador, providing important one-on-one patient care in the process of producing laboratory results.
Responsibilities:
• Willing to work extra when someone is sick, on vacation or at a meeting. Flexible about work assignments; accepts daily assignment willingly, positively and with a determination to do the best possible job for the patient and the hospital. • Reviews policy and procedure changes when posted. Documents review in a timely manner. • Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (QAI) activities. • Understands and follow the procedure for critical values and documents reporting of critical results correctly. • Performs venipuncture and capillary collection according to the policies and procedures. Collects specimens efficiently and within acceptable time frame with a minimal number of re-sticks due to missed veins. Correctly labels all specimens drawn. Understands and follows the policy for labeling blood bank specimens and when to use blood bank armbands. Is attentive, pleasant and courteous to patients. • Attends staff meetings and reviews all staff meeting minutes. • Assumes responsibility for documenting education requirements. • Receives and processes specimens. Verifies specimens are properly labeled. Knows procedure to follow if a specimen is received that is not labeled correctly or unacceptable for test(s) ordered. • Positively identifies patient according to policy before drawing blood. • Understands specimen requirements before collecting specimens. Collects correct tube(s) for testing ordered. Correctly handles specimens that have special requirements. • Reviews written orders for proper documentation. Contacts office when additional information is needed. • Successfully and appropriately utilizes the Meditech medical Necessity program. Understands how to find appropriate diagnosis codes and correctly administers ABN when required. • Orders laboratory testing in the Meditech correctly. Performs double check of order entry with other staff members. • Instructs patient in proper collection of specimens(s). • Knows the location of supplies and reagents. Ensures that supplies are available and notifies appropriate personnel when low. • Documents the receipt of supplies and rotates stock appropriately. Dates and initials supplies when opened. • Sendout - Duties & Responsibilities • Understands procedures and policies. Knows where to find needed information using resources available. Processes sent out specimens according to the policies and procedures. • Know the location of supplies and reagents. Ensures that supplies are available and notifies appropriate personnel when low. • Results testing in the Meditech electronically and manually. Distributes reports to correct location when required. Maintains required laboratory records.
