The Safety and Health Officer is part of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety for Kansas State University. They support safety, health and compliance programs for university activities. 
  • Assists or conducts health and safety inspections and compliance audits.
  • Assesses processes, worksites, classrooms, clinics and laboratories for presence of occupational health and safety hazards.
  • Prepares timely, accurate and complete reports of assessment or inspection findings.
  • Operates and calibrates a variety of sampling and monitoring instruments
  • Assists or performs job hazard analyses to determine appropriate administrative practices, engineering controls, or personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce risk to workers and students.
  • Provides guidance or strategies to eliminate hazards or reduce risk.
  • Assists with equipment testing/inspection (e.g., fume hood, local exhaust systems). 
  • Performs personnel and area monitoring or sampling (of chemical, physical or biological agents using various sampling media and instrumentation). Researches appropriate test/sample methods.
  • May assist with Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) assessments.
  • Participates as a member or supports the hazardous materials response team.
  • Maintains records in databases (e.g., materials and equipment inventories and inspection records).
  • Review/edit/write institutional safety documents to meet federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Public Health, or related science or engineering discipline (e.g. toxicology, environmental health)
  • Three years of related experience. (This position may use an educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager to substitute for two years of professional experience.)
  • A valid Driver’s license upon employment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in industrial hygiene or related field may substitute for two years of professional experience
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (may substitute for closely related degree, Must still have BA or BS)
  • Experience in laboratory safety, inspections and/or past experience working in laboratory setting
  • Coursework in chemistry, toxicology, or engineering principles
  • Experience, training, or education in operation of monitoring, testing, sampling, laboratory and/or analytical instrumentation
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate a variety of technical data, test results, reports and plans
  • Demonstrates strong quantitative and analytical capability
  • Strong computer skills, attention to detail, and record keeping skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for broad audience
  • Aptitude to learn hazardous materials response safety
  • Ability to work effectively with ethnic, cultural, and socially diverse population
  • Knowledge or coursework of physical and toxicological effects of occupational hazards
  • Knowledge of occupational health standards, codes, and regulations
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques used in collecting samples and assessing hazardous environments and applicable regulations
  • Experience supporting or managing respiratory protection programs

Other Requirements:
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Ability to transport up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to be medically cleared/approved to wear respiratory protection, including SCBA.
