Keep Douglasville Beautiful Community Gardens VISTA

The program will provide healthy and affordable foods in food deserts and help solve the problem of food insecurity through Community Gardens and a Farmers Market. The VISTA member will provide ongoing support and capacity building of the newly established Community Garden by continuing to identify and engage interested partners, motivate and overcome barriers to progress and achievement and connect with local resources. The VISTA will research and establish additional community gardens sites in the low-income areas where food deserts have been identified. The VISTA member will additionally help to research and develop new systems and processes of an existing local Farmers Market and work with the Healthy Eating collaborative to secure growers and vendors and promote the market. Organize and convene advisory committee. a. Connect with community partners in established network. b. Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for garden sites. 2. Reevaluate current policies and procedures and develop best practices for community garden use. 3. Designate site(s) for community garden and/or demonstration gardens. a. Gather information on available sites. b. Choose best location. 4. Seek possible funding sources if needed. a. Private and public grants. b. Cash and in-kind donations from local individuals and businesses. c. Fundraising event.

Member Duties: The VISTA member will strive to reduce food insecurity within the City of Douglasville through farmer's markets and community garden organizations. The day-to-day work will consist of managing volunteers at the garden and tracking output levels. Some days will be spent researching community outreach opportunities and planning events. The VISTA member will additionally help to research and develop new systems and processes of an existing local Farmers Market and work with the Healthy Eating collaborative to secure growers and vendors and promote the market.
