Communications Sustainability Intern

Synopsis: MCC East Coast (EC) seeks a hard-working, dedicated and teachable college student to serve as an intern in our Ephrata office as the Communications Sustainability Intern. They will support the work of one of MCC’s programs, the Material Resources Center (MRC) in Ephrata, PA. The MRC functions to process and ship quality material resources for MCC both domestically and internationally. Caring volunteers provide the manpower behind the MRC while taking part in MCC's ministries. The MRC also offers educational opportunities to visitors and volunteers alike. The Communications Sustainability Intern will specifically focus on providing support to this work at the MRC.
The student will be supervised by the EC Communications Director and will work closely with the MCC U.S. Communicators Network and MCC U.S. Material Resources Network. 
This short-term internship is a learning and leadership development opportunity. The position will provide the framework for a student to gain first-hand communications experience, depending on the student’s strengths and interests, in the areas of writing, graphic design, marketing, social media and public speaking in a global nonprofit. The intern will also learn about the broader work of Mennonite Central Committee both in the U.S. and in the world.
This is a paid internship opportunity but must be taken for credit or to fulfill a college graduation requirement.

  • Legal eligibility to be employed in the U.S. is required.
  • Undergraduate student majoring in communications, public relations, marketing, advertising, graphic design, journalism, nonprofit management or other related discipline
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Publisher)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite – InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat (for graphic design students)
  • Proficient in Facebook
  • Organized, with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments
  • Creative and flexible
  • Beginner level familiarity with website CMS and intranet preferred
  • Interest in nonprofit management


Duties to include:

Writing
• Write stories of how kits are being used domestically in the EC.
• Highlight the work of groups and individuals in the region involved in material resources. Write stories about volunteers at the MRC for monthly Volunteer Newsletter.
• Write MRC-related church announcements highlighting need for volunteers or humanitarian aid donations.

Graphic Design
• Update and/or develop signage that shows the impact that the MRC’s recycling practices has on the environment and MCC.
• Develop presentations to give at the MRC on MCC’s work with material resources and recycling.
• Assist with layout of the monthly MRC Volunteer Newsletter in conjunction with the MRC Volunteer Coordinator.
• Update the MRC volunteer picture wall with help from the MRC Volunteer Coordinator.

Marketing/Events
• Find ways to promote the Hands of Love Gift Shop and Quilter’s Corner, both of which raise money for MCC’s ministries.
• Create a distribution plan for MCC’s relief kit packing toolkit.
• Work with the MRC Volunteer Coordinator to create an interactive tour for visitors, particularly focusing on engaging children and youth.
• Work with the MRC staff to create a plan for staying engaged with visitors turning them from visitors to volunteers to donors.
• Work with the MRC Volunteer Coordinator on ways to better promote volunteer opportunities.

Social Media
• Keep the Material Resources Center (MRC) Facebook page updated with content. This includes looking into posting volunteer opportunities through Facebook and exploring the possibility of creating short video tutorials for the Facebook page.
• Work towards creating a social media calendar with the Communications Director that the MRC staff can easily pick up after internship is over.
