Public Citizen - Global Trade Watch Research Summer Internship

 

General Description: The research intern will provide invaluable support to the research team by providing substantive background investigation into varied topics such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals, food safety issues, environmental policies, trade policy positions of Congressional candidates, financial regulation, foreign direct investment, and jobs and wages, among others. Beyond analyzing the U.S. impacts of trade and investment policies, we are currently working on projects covering Brazil, China, Europe, Southeast Asia, and several Latin American countries. The research intern will also attend Congressional hearings, think tank briefings, and other events and report back to GTW. All interns are expected to do some administrative support work, but the majority of the research intern’s duties will involve working directly with the research team.

 

Qualifications: Qualified applicants will have had experience conducting in-depth research, including broad-based internet searches, database research, and experience providing article and topic summaries. Excellent writing skills and proficiency in Word and Excel needed. Previous experience and understanding of trade policy issues is preferred but not required.

 

Capabilities: We are seeking candidates who are well organized, creative, willing to learn, detail-oriented and not afraid to ask questions or present ideas. The research intern should be able to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Since the research intern may be starting the initial research for future projects, they will need to be comfortable discussing new ideas with the research team.

 

Conditions: The office is located on the third floor and requires walking two flights of stairs and several blocks to and from congressional offices. GTW is a smoke-free workplace.

 

Expectations: We expect that interns be able to work a minimum of 10-15 hours a week. Our internships generally follow the academic calendar (beginning and ending with each semester,) but there is some flexibility within that. We request at least an 8-week commitment, though interns may request to remain longer than one semester.

 

Compensation: The research intern position is unpaid. Academic credit can be arranged.

Overview

Public Citizen is at the forefront of fighting corporate power and defending our democracy. We organize, lobby, litigate, conduct research, and communicate with the press and public in a variety of ways.

Our interns work with Public Citizen staff including researchers, organizers, program directors, campaign directors, press officers, lobbyists, and fundraisers and more. Summer interns will have the opportunity to participate in luncheons with senior staff, networking events, and other activities.

Internship

Public Citizen internships are available year round. Our summer internships are typically full time (40 hours a week for around eight weeks), although we have some flexibility as to hours and weeks.
