Environmental & Sustainability Specialist

Ideal Candidate: Has a strong interest and background in sustainability research and planning services. Technical environmental expertise with strong research and writing skills necessary.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Environmental Science or Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, Geology, Forestry, Soil Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Soil Conservation, or Environmental Policy, or closely related field. Preference for master’s degree or certification.
  • Two to three years of applied working experience.
Position Summary: This position is responsible for performing technical research and writing for various environmental and sustainability-related subjects.
Initial focuswill beon one/all of the following: solid waste and water resources planning; GHG emissions analysis; climate action planning.
Other illustrative examples of work to be performed include:
  • Performs an array of technical research, policy review, planning, writing and project management activities for assigned environmental and sustainability projects and programs.
  • Responds to inquiries from local governments, communities, businesses, and other interested parties regarding technical support for the above projects. Prepares reports and documents relating to the assigned projects.
  • Reviews and evaluates reports and recommends appropriate changes or actions for the region.
  • Monitors trends in research findings, tools, concepts and methodologies.
Critical knowledge and fundamental skills required for the position, include:
  • Possesses technical knowledge of complex federal, state, and local environmental regulatory laws and ordinances including but not limited to the Clean Air & Water Act; NEPA; RCRA; CERCLA; and TSCA.
  • Possesses technical knowledge in at least one of the following areas: renewable energy, water quality and conservation, recycling and waste reduction, sustainability and climate action planning, hazard mitigation, and/or greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Strong project management skills: Takes initiative to problem-solve, develop plans, and follow-through projects to conclusion.
  • Works collaboratively with others to ensure the success and achievement of team members in the fulfillment of RPC priorities.
