Annals of Iowa Editorial Internship

This is a non-paid intern position with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.  

Internship Purpose and Goals
  • Develop Annals metadata to be used for library catalog and searchable digital databases 
  • Create index for most recent issues of the Annals 
  • Provide editorial support for Annals book reviews 
  • These projects will greatly improve the accessibility of Annals articles and provide an intern with a basic introduction to metadata and editorial work 
  • This work will make the current and back catalog of the Annals significantly more accessible to the public in both online and physical contexts

Time Commitment
  • Duration: Fall Semester 
  • Frequency: Minimum of 5 hours per week, unpaid.

Duties and Essential Activities
  • Index most recent issues of Annals of Iowa 
  • Create metadata for most recent issues of Annals of Iowa as well as select past issues.

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Must be pursuing a graduate degree (MA or PhD, history or library science students preferred) 
  • Superior reading comprehension and writing skills 
  • Have an interest in Iowa history, academic publishing and/or library sciences (cataloging and metadata, specifically) Training 
  • The selected intern will be trained as needed in indexing and metadata development

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
