Grant Writing Assistant Fall Internship

Background:

The AHA Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit working to liberate women and girls from practices that violate their human rights. That means liberty from female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), honor violence and child marriage. The AHA Foundation was founded by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in 2007 and currently has representatives working in five US states.
Since 2010, the Foundation’s Women’s program has highlighted violence against women and girls perpetrated in the US in the name culture. We work to expand and strengthen state and federal legislation that makes the U.S. a safer place to be a women or girl, and we train frontline professionals from health, education, social work and child protection in; risk assessment, early intervention and prevention, and the provision of culturally sensitive support.

Purpose:

The Grant Writing Assistant will support AHA’s Senor Consultant in raising funds for FGM/C training of frontline professionals is health, education, social work and criminal justice. This is a part-time remote based position.
Typically inflict on defenseless girls between infancy and fifteen years of age, FGM/C is a horrendous form of child abuse. Girls traumatized by FGM face serious threats to their health through infection, hemorrhage and septicemia as well as long-term urological and obstetric complications and life-long, psychological trauma. The practice of FGM/C violates several human rights principles, as recognized by the United Nations, and is a federal offense under U.S. law.
Although many associate FGM with specific religious dogmas, no mainstream faith condones the practice. It is a cultural rather than religious practice.

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Participate in all aspects of government grant-giving
  • Assist the Senior Consultant identify federal, state, and foundation grant-giving opportunities
  • Help implement cultivation strategies
  • Prepare grant applications, utilizing and adapting templates provided

Key competencies, technical background, and experience required:

  • Current enrollment in a related bachelor's degree program
  • Ability to work as a team and understand the needs and interests of the AHA Foundation
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments
