The South Dakota Department of Corrections will be offering a $1,500 retention bonus for successful candidates who maintain two years of continuous employment. Details will be discussed during interviews.
Maintains custody of male inmates at the South Dakota State Penitentiary by enforcing institution operations memoranda and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the inmates and employees and that confinement conditions are maintained.
Service as a Correctional Officer at the State Penitentiary is an excellent way to begin a law enforcement career and to gain supervisory experience.

Knowledge of:

- stand and walk without rest for prolonged periods;
- perform duties in enclosed and confined spaces;
- perform duties in all types of weather;
- respond to emergencies quickly;
- exercise tact and discretion in dealing with others.
