Research Technician II, Cell Biology

Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, antiracism, and inclusion.

A Research Tech II position is available in the Parkhurst lab at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. A hallmark of many diseases and cancers is a dysfunctional cytoskeleton. A properly functioning cytoskeleton is needed for a wide variety of cellular events ranging from cell shape to cell signaling and migration/metastasis. The Parkhurst lab uses multidisciplinary approaches to study dynamic cytoskeleton processes in the regulation of normal developmental events and when mis-regulated in diseases/cancer.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in the following research areas using the Drosophila model system:
(1) nuclear envelope budding/organization and (2) cell wound repair.

Responsibilities

The research tech will primarily carry out an independent research project that involves cell biology, developmental genetics, and molecular biology. They will also participate in lab meetings and journal clubs. Other responsibilities include general lab maintenance (ordering, caring for Drosophila flies, fly media preparation), and other duties as needed. We are looking for candidates that can thrive in a fast paced environment, that value teamwork, that support diversity, and who are great communicators.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a biological science and 2+ years' lab experience are required.
  • Reliability is essential.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good quantitative skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • To be successful in this position, the technician must have scientific curiosity, a high level of self-motivation, the ability to take instruction and correction and to follow directions, good organizational skills, the ability to work and think independently, and wants to stay at least two years.
  • Must be able to distinguish different intensities and hues of red color.

A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.
