Aquatic Lands Unit Supervisor

Accidental spills of dangerous materials and past business practices have contaminated land and water throughout the state. The Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) works to remedy these situations, which range from cleaning up contamination from leaking underground storage tanks, to large, complex projects requiring engineering solutions. Our mission is to get and keep contaminants out of the environment.

The Aquatic Lands Unit Supervisor role is located in our Headquarters Office in in Lacey, WA. The position is classified as Washington Management Service (WMS) Band 1. To learn more about the state's management classification system, please visit this link.

You'll lead and support technical staff to clean up and restore portions of Puget Sound, the Columbia River, and other water bodies in Washington State. You'll oversee personnel administration, directing and managing professional-level technical staff, and strategically implementing sediment management cleanup and restoration for the Puget Sound Initiative sites at headquarters, as well as policy and guidance development. Additionally, you'll provide strategic sediment management planning, outreach, and technical assistance for the Toxics Cleanup Program, other Ecology programs, the regulated community, the legislature, business groups, and the citizens of Washington State.

Duties



 
What you'll do:
Work in the field of marine and freshwater sediments that aquatic and other life depend on for survival. You'll protect and restore important ecosystems, critical to the environment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational, volunteer and lived-experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:
A bachelor's degree with major study in natural science (Aquatic Biology, Ecology, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, etc.) and four (4) years of professional-level work experience (professional research will be counted) in environmental analysis or control, including two (2) years equal to or above an Environmental Specialist 3 position at the Department of Ecology.

Option 2:
A master's degree with major study in natural science (Aquatic Biology, Ecology, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, etc.) and three (3) years of professional-level work experience (professional research will be counted) in environmental analysis or control, including two (2) years equal to or above an Environmental Specialist 3 position at the Department of Ecology. 

Option 3:
A PhD degree with major study in natural science (Aquatic Biology, Ecology, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, etc.) and two (2) years of professional-level work experience (professional research will be counted) in environmental analysis or control, including two (2) years equal to or above an Environmental Specialist 3 position at the Department of Ecology. 

The individual must have, or develop during the trial/probationary period, a professional working knowledge of MTCA/SMS, Clean Water Act (CWA), and CERCLA regulations; and, SCUM and Wood Waste guidelines. The position must have, or develop during the trial/probationary period, a working knowledge of TCP policies and guidance.
