Research Engineer, Advanced Prototypes

SRI International's Advanced Technology and Systems Division (ATSD) performs research across a wide range of disciplines, from novel material development to advanced optical, radar, and imaging systems, transitioning technology from basic R&D to fieldable prototypes.

Our SRI campus in Princeton, NJ has an immediate opening for a Research Engineer within ATSD, specifically to support the laboratory-based development and characterization of complex test-beds. The activity will be very hands-on, with activity spanning the design, fabrication, and implementation of experimental test-sets and advanced prototypes for applications in optical and quantum sensing systems.
The candidate will use a diverse set of skills to contribute to the development of novel devices at the intersection of electrical, thermal, mechanical, and optical engineering. The candidate will work with a collaborative team of engineers and applied physicists to realize proof-of-concept demonstrations of such sensors and systems, and contribute at an individual level with expected guidance from more senior group members. Additionally, the position entails working with the project Principal Investigators to manage technical projects, such as supporting project reporting and team organization.

Established skills should include a subset of:
  • Physical measurement and instrumentation of experiments, including common lab measurement equipment
  • Optical assembly design and alignment (free space or fiber)
  •  Electronics and circuits; electrical assembly/soldering
  • Vacuum system assembly
  • CAD design and modeling (SolidWorks, COMSOL)
  •  Data acquisition and analysis (MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python)
  • Machining Experience
