Reporter (Oregonian.com)

The Oregonian/OregonLive is seeking candidates for the night reporter position on our breaking news/public safety team. The general assignment reporter starts in the early afternoon ready to take the handoff from the dayside crew and continue our coverage of the day’s most important public safety stories through reporting, iterating, writing final drafts for print and gathering video and audio when possible. It’s key for the reporter to create a hand-off plan for the morning crew, recognizing second-day enterprise and beyond off spot news.

We’re looking for an eager collaborator who can launch on a range of stories -- recent examples include a hit-and-run driver who plowed into 10 people, an escalation of bias crimes against Asian American people and social justice protests. As this reporter will work independently overseeing our late-night coverage, they must also have strong news judgment, solid writing skills and a driving sense of urgency to be on the scene as soon as possible, whether the news is happening across town or across the state.

  • Degree in Journalism or Communications or related field required
  • Minimum of 2 years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing required
  • Proven experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience
  • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Demonstrated reporting, writing and organizational skills

  • Experience with search engine optimization practices
  • Experience with using social media to source and promote content a plus
  • Demonstrated capability in capitalizing on high-value topics by engaging audiences in frequency and urgency
  • Understanding of the methods and tools used to deliver content across a variety of platforms such as Moveable Type CMS, SCC Budgeting and Archiving System, Smartphones
  • Understanding imperatives of multiple platforms -- print, mobile, Internet, etc.
  • Mastery of social media and digital interaction
  • Proven ability to utilize a broad set of tools to tell stories and engage the audience
  • Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
