Postdoctoral Research Associate – Computational Chemistry

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
Organizational Overview
The mission of the Chemistry Division (http://www.bnl.gov/chemistry) is to conduct basic and applied chemical research with an emphasis on new energy conversion pathways. Primary research subjects include catalysis and electrocatalysis for sustainable fuel synthesis and use, solar energy conversion to fuels, fundamental gas and condensed phase molecular dynamics, radiation chemistry, and advanced chemical separations for energy applications.
Position Description
The Chemistry Division of Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a postdoctoral Research Associate in computational chemistry to join the newly DOE-funded Center for Hybrid Approaches in Solar Energy to Liquid Fuels (CHASE), a Fuels from Sunlight Center that will be led by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). In addition to BNL, it includes collaborators at Emory University, North Carolina State University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.
The successful candidate will conduct basic research as part of the CHASE team with a specific focus on (i) the control of molecular catalysis by tuning of the microenvironment at the interface; and (ii) coupling of multiple molecular catalysts through cascade catalysis to generate liquid fuels from carbon dioxide.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a team of scientists from the Artificial Photosynthesis (AP, https://www.bnl.gov/chemistry/AP/) and Catalysis: Reactivity and Structure (CRS, https://www.bnl.gov/chemistry/CRS/) groups. Research is also expected to involve extensive collaboration with investigators at other CHASE institutions.
Position Requirements
Required, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ph. D. in theoretical or physical chemistry, or a related field.
  • Strong background in computational modeling of homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis.
Preferred, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Density functional theory applications to transition-metal containing molecular complexes.
  • First principles molecular dynamics simulations of semiconductor surfaces and nanostructures.
The position will be available starting in April 2021 and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
BNL policy requires Research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past 5 years.
