Children's Products Compliance Specialist

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

As the Children’s Safe Products Act (CSPA) compliance specialist, you will be working with a team of scientists who are passionate about the work we do to protect Washington’s residents and environment. This position is responsible for ensuring industry is complying with CSPA by verifying reporting is completed correctly on an annual basis. This position also gets the opportunity to initiate any rulemaking updates needed for CSPA and collaborate with the Product Testing team to test children’s items of interest.

The Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Children’s Products Compliance Specialist position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.

The mission of the Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction (HWTR) Program is to protect Washington’s residents and environment by reducing the use of toxic chemicals, safely managing dangerous waste, preventing new contaminated sites, and cleaning up contamination. The HWTR vision is to be national leaders in minimizing and eliminating the impacts of toxic chemicals and hazardous waste.

Duties

What will you do?
As a senior environmental specialist, you will lead compliance assurance and enforcement of the Children’s Safe Product Act (CSPA). This includes working with product manufacturers that are required to report the presence of chemical ingredients for high priority chemicals of concern in children's products offered for sale in Washington.
 
Our state is a national leader in promoting safer products for Washington. In addition to providing technical assistance to companies and the public, we purchase products and test them to monitor compliance with our state laws. Some examples include:
 
  • Working on product recalls for toxic levels of cadmium in children’s jewelry.
  • Testing children’s clothing and accessories for chemicals of concern.  
  • Working with other states that have similar laws, including toxics in packaging. 

Why join the team?

This team is working on the front lines of reducing toxic threats to children and advancing the new Safer Product for Washington Program. This team works in collaboration to: 
  • Conduct a future rulemaking to revise RCW 70.240 and the list of high priority chemicals to children.
  • Recommend enforcement actions and prepare required enforcement documents.
  • Coordinate the analysis of the data reported under the CSPA Reporting Rule.
  • Work with other states and businesses to develop alignment among state approaches to chemical policy.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational, volunteer and lived-experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1:
  
 Nine (9) years of combined education and experience:
  • Education: Involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
  • Experience: In environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.
 
 Option 2: 

  • A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.

  Option 3: 

  • A Master’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.
 
 Option 4:

  • A Ph.D. in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field
  • Two (2) years of experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.
 
 Option 5:
 
Two (2) years of experience as an Environmental Specialist 3 at the Department of Ecology.
