Life & Culture Reporter (Syracuse.com)
As a Life and Culture Reporter at Advance Media New York, you'll be identifying and writing stories that introduce Central New York readers to the real people who make our community a rich, diverse, eclectic place to live.
We're looking for someone who is curious about the world around them, and who will use that curiosity to tell engaging, fun stories that generate conversation among readers. This includes doing enterprise reporting, writing profiles, previewing events, identifying and explaining regional, cultural and entertainment trends and more. We want you to write the kinds of stories people talk about that night over cocktails.
The ideal candidate for this job is a versatile storyteller who uses a variety of tools to engage readers, including print/digital media, photos, and videos.
What you'll need:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field
- Minimum two years of journalism experience with a proven ability to write engaging copy that's clear and accurate
- Ability to identify and pitch stories, and show judgment on what makes for good news
- Ability to multitask, work independently on deadline and prioritize tasks
- Solid understanding of the news industry and local market
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills
- Proven ability to engage an audience on social media
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends, to help provide 24/7 media coverage
- Ability to shoot and edit photos and video
The role:
The Life & Culture Reporter is part of a team of journalists who cover food and drink, the outdoors, the arts, history, events and more. The team works together to keep locals informed about who we are as a community.
You'll be responsible for developing a network of community sources to help keep readers up-to-date on new and interesting things taking place and the people who make those things happen. You'll be tasked with writing multiple stories each week ranging from news briefs to well-reported features. This job cannot be done from home -- you'll be expected to get out into the community and share what you find with readers in print and online.
