Position Overview
The Child Life Specialist is a professional, trained to work with children and families during stressful events, such as those surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of disease while in the home community setting. The Child Life Specialist attends to the psychosocial needs of children and helps pediatric patients and siblings cope with the advanced illness experience through play and expressive activities. The Child Life Specialist also provides emotional support and guidance to parents and family members of children with advanced illness. Emphasis is on the pre-bereavement needs of the child and sibling along the disease trajectory.
 
Work Schedule – 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (Monday-Friday) Flexibility required to occasionally attend/host evening events
 
Service Area(s) – Northern Cook, Lake, McHenry, DuPage, DeKalb Counties
 
Requirements for Child Life Specialist position
  • Bachelor’s degree required with focus on Education, Psychology, or Child Development; Master’s degree preferred
  • Credentialed by the Child Life Council as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS)
  • Maintains continuing education as required by the Child Life Council
  • 2 to 3 years of experience as a Certified Child Life Specialist
  • Experience working with seriously/terminally ill children and the pediatric death and dying experience
  • Certain positions require pediatric skill competencies on an infant, toddler, preschool, school age or adolescent
  • Organizational skills
  • Adaptability
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Apple/Mac, Allscripts/EMR experience) voice mail
  • Excellent communication skills verbal and written
  • Analytical skills
