Salary:

The starting salary for this role is $13.21 per hour. 
  

About the Job:

As the Accounting Intern at SBOA, you will apply professional accounting and auditing knowledge and techniques under the direction of an experienced Field Examiner or Field Supervisor to assist in planning, conducting, and reporting on routine or special audits of the State and/or local agencies governmental units, State and Federal programs. You will verify compliance with State, federal, and local laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations in terms of consistency and adherence to accepted accounting principles and management practices. You will report to advanced level Field Examiner or Field Supervisor.


A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 
 
  • Designs and performs necessary audit procedures on complex governmental units such as large cities including evaluating accounting and administrative controls, preparing and performing audit tests to document financial statements, analyzing and interpreting audit test results and conducting exit conferences
  • Issues written reports on financial position and compliance
  • Performs audits of all federal funds received by governmental units
  • Researches federal laws, state statutes, case law, regulations, local ordinances and authoritative standards in preparation of audits
  • Assists, advises and instructs elected and appointed public officials regarding statutory requirements, accounting applications, management practices and agency audit positions
  • Performs duties in a confidential, professional manner

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through attending a 4-year post-secondary institution working toward a Baccalaureate degree in Accounting
  • Working knowledge of basic accounting principles and procedures, and auditing standards
  • Working knowledge of procedural and legislative controls governing the activity being audited
  • Ability to apply mathematical skills relevant to auditing and accounting procedures utilized in performance of duties
  • Ability to interpret, analyze, and record data and fiscal information to reach logical conclusions
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to prepare clear, conclusive reports
  • Ability to gain the cooperation of the personnel in the organizations being audited


Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
