Internship - Accounting - Spring 2022

The purpose of the internship will be to provide a broad training experience outlining the YMCA's mission and its impact on the community and the associated non-profit operational practices/procedures that support these efforts. Specific accounting focused training, tasks and special projects will provide practical and real life experience with non-profit accounts payables, bank reconciliations, general ledgers, and year-end accounting processes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
You will learn to:
1. Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and demonstrate the YMCA mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
2. Observe and perform basic to intermediate accounting functions and tasks.
3. Prepare spreadsheets with data interpretation, reconciliation and review.
4. Observe and learn the Purchase Order process, matching PO's to invoices and verifying General Ledger accounts.
5. Access the accounting database and learn invoicing process, check creation and proper storage/retention of paid invoices.
6. Review expense reports for any discrepancies, research such discrepancies and coordinate with payroll for data entry.
7. Review business credit card program, statement submission process and process entries in account database.
8. Assist accounting team with monthly bank reconciliation process.
9. Perform related duties in support of year end project efforts.
10. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
11. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
1. Background in Accounting, Finance, non-profit management or other related discipline.
2. Strong communication skills.
3. Proficient in Microsoft Suite Office.
4. Organized, with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments.
5. Interest in nonprofit management and community development.
6. Must be able to pass background check

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this project, the intern is frequently required to sit for great lengths of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Project may require some periods of standing and walking. The intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

PROJECT ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this project, the intern primarily works in an office environment but is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts associated with fitness and commercial cleaning equipment. The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to moderate during office hours and moderate to loud during event hours.
