Process Development Scientist, Downstream

New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a driven Process Development (PD) Scientist for an MSAT role within our expanding, multidisciplinary PD group. The person in this position will work closely with existing PD resources to establish scalable processing solutions for our diverse product portfolio. Within this fast-paced, dynamic and collaborative work environment the successful candidate will elevate manufacturing of high-quality reagents across multiple facilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, plan, and execute technical projects at bench and pilot scales in the areas of cell lysis and clarification with particular goals to develop and characterize unit operations.
  • Investigate multiple methods of cell lysis (e.g. conventional high-pressure homogenization, high shear microfluidization) and clarification (e.g. tubular bowl and disc stack centrifuge, polymer induced flocculation, depth filtration, tangential flow filtration).
  • Establish techniques and metrics for process analysis including turbidity, viscosity, particle size, product stability and capture.
  • Develop scale-up/scale-down models with attention to equipment options at various manufacturing facilities.
  • Collaborating in tech transfer of developed lysis and clarification processes to manufacturing and supporting implementation.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute activities for process monitoring and process data analysis.
  • Determine root-causes of process variation and identify process trends to increase efficiency.
  • Effectively organize, interpret, and present data to peers, cross functional teams, senior leadership, and colleagues.
  • Advocate for new bioprocessing and information technologies to help advance manufacturing.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Engineering or related scientific field with a minimum of 3 years of industry experience. Advanced degree in related field may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial methods of cell lysis and clarification such as centrifugation, depth filtration and tangential flow filtration. Experience at multiple scales preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to solve complex technical issues.
  • Ability to compile, analyze and interpret data.
  • Communicate effectively across multifunctional teams.
  • Flexible, adaptable and desire to take on new technology challenges and broaden skill set.
