Lead Research Scientist - Legacy Pesticides

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Lead Research Scientist – Legacy Pesticides (Natural Resource Scientist 4) position. This position is located in our Central Regional Office (CRO) in Union Gap, WA.

The Toxics Cleanup Program serving central Washington prides itself on listening to the needs of communities and offering practical, straight-forward solutions.

In this position, you will lead Ecology’s research into legacy pesticides. These legacy pesticides are widespread throughout central Washington and require innovative and creative solutions. You’ll work with health professionals and local leaders to share information and raise community awareness.

The mission of the Toxics Cleanup Program is to protect Washington’s human health and the environment. We do this by preventing and cleaning up pollution. We also support sustainable communities and natural resources for the benefit of future and current generations. This position directly supports TCP’s strategic goal of cleaning up legacy pollution.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is expected to work in the office for staff training and collaborative assignments infrequently, but up to three days a week. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding building occupancy, mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.

Duties


What makes this role unique?
In this position, you will work with aerial photography, x-ray fluorescence, GIS, lead and arsenic contamination, and old orchards. It ties past farming practices to current pollution, and challenges you to find a way forward.

What you'll do: 

  • Work with real estate developers to sample property and offer solutions.
  • Use X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology to sample soil, and train others to use it as well.
  • Maintain Ecology’s online mapping tool, which shows the locations of historical orchards and any current sampling results.
  • Develop partnerships with health professionals throughout central Washington to help with data collection and dissemination.
  • Work with existing data to plan for future sampling efforts.
  • Publish reports detailing trends and anomalies with collected data.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment and educational experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1: 
A Bachelor's degree with a major study in a natural science (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Physics, Geography, Agricultural Science, etc.) AND 
Six years of professional research work experience in a specialty field (e.g., soil science, fate and transport of environmental contamination, legacy pesticide contamination, or GIS mapping).

Option 2:
A Master's degree with a major study in a natural science (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Physics, Geography, Agricultural Science, etc.) AND 
Four years of professional research work experience in a specialty field (e.g., soil science, fate and transport of environmental contamination, legacy pesticide contamination, or GIS mapping).

Option 3:
A Ph.D. degree with major study in a natural science (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Physics, Geography, Agricultural Science, etc.) AND 
Three years of professional research work experience in a specialty field (e.g., soil science, fate and transport of environmental contamination, legacy pesticide contamination, or GIS mapping).

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
