Research Associate-Transgenic Mouse Support/Mammalian Gene Expression

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Research Associate-Transgenic Mouse Support/Mammalian Gene Expression to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be under direct supervision, where you will work in the Mammalian Functional Genomics Lab to carry out various semi-routine duties related to support of the transgenic mouse group and support of the molecular biology lab as part of several projects aimed at understanding how mammalian gene expression is regulated.  You will work with live mice, mouse tissue samples, and perform animal microdissection.  You will be expected to assist with analyzing experimental results, generate reports, and present findings at group meetings.

What You Will Do:
  • Provide support to the transgenic mouse facility, including but not limited to general animal husbandry, intraperitoneal injections of hormones, embryo production, egg collection, microdissection, identification of pseudo-pregnant recipient females, maintenance of mouse colonies, genomic DNA isolation for genotyping of transgenic lines, and euthanasia.
  • Provide general semi-routine support to molecular biology labs including but not limited to dishwashing, autoclaving of glassware, routine maintenance of lab equipment, buffer production, and supply inventory.
  • Perform various molecular biology techniques such as PCR, small- and large-scale plasmid preps, restriction enzyme digest, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Perform minimal analysis with experimental results, generate reports, and present findings.
  • Maintain careful records of all experiments performed.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and other team members to discuss project progress and provide recommendations to improve the experimental pipeline.
  • Job requires occasional weekend work.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Assist with collection of mouse embryonic and adult tissues.
  • Maintain mouse lineages (mate, wean, tag, ear, or tail tip biopsy).
  • Molecular cloning tasks including vector ligation and bacterial work (transformation, plating and colony screens).

What is Required:
  • B.A or B.S degree in Biology or related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Willingness to work with mice.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory protocols and technologies.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, writing, and record-keeping skills.
  • Good analytical skills to effectively evaluate data and make recommendations.
  • Excellent and effective interpersonal communication and presentation skills; ability to interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Must demonstrate efficient time management skills and the ability to multitask.
  • Competent in the use of computers and related software programs (i.e., PC, Mac, Google Drive).
  • Willingness to work in a research lab environment with changing priorities and technologies.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Preferred 1+ years of research laboratory and/or research animal experience.
  • Experience with mouse animal husbandry and/or handling live rodents in a research environment.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques: PCR, bacterial transformation, small- and large-scale DNA purification, restriction digest, and gel electrophoresis.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Notes:
  • This is a full time, 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
