Spring 2022 Federal Policy Paid Internship

The Hispanic Federation (HF) is the nation's premier Latino nonprofit membership organization. Hispanic Federation’s DC office is responsible for federal policy advocacy that impacts our 100+ member organizations. Working alongside members of Congress and through national coalitions, the Hispanic Federation’s role is to fight for fair policies and equity for our members and Hispanic and immigrant communities in general. The federal policy priority areas for the HF D.C. office include immigration, environment (climate change and energy resiliency), rebuilding a resilient Puerto Rico, health, education, and civil rights. 

Summary
Hispanic Federation’s D.C. office is seeking two interns to join our federal policy team and learn more about the role of federal advocacy, policy, and politics. This internship is ideal for someone with a strong academic record, excellent writing, research, and organizational skills, and a strong interest in policy and politics in our nation’s capital. As part of a small team, the federal policy interns will provide direct administrative support to the Vice President of Federal Policy and may have the opportunity to represent the organization at coalition meetings and events. Federal policy interns will gain substantial experience in policy research, analysis, advocacy strategies, and politics. 
This internship opportunity is being offered as a hybrid virtual/in-person model with a preference for applicants who may be able to work from the Hispanic Federation office in downtown D.C. when the office re-opens. 
This is a paid internship. Interns receive $15.20 per hour (maximum of 30 hours per week), paid holidays, and sick leave. 

Responsibilities Include
  • Maintain various Hispanic Federation databases and websites  
  • Ability to synthesize policy issues and advocacy activity 
  • Provide administrative support for the D.C. office on various tasks and assignments including advocacy events and meetings 
  • Attend policy briefings, coalition meetings and calls, and events on behalf of the Hispanic Federation D.C. office 
  • Conduct and synthesize research on federal policy proposals and political and legislative proceedings into easily accessible information to be used in fact sheets, internal and external policy briefings, social media, etc. 
  • Write, edit, and review sections of reports, congressional letters, and other written materials produced by the D.C. office 

Qualifications:  
Rising junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled in political science, international relations, environmental sciences, sociology, or related field, with: 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills 
  • Strong interest in federal policy issues 
  • Ability to quickly get up to speed on policy-related issues 
  • Strong commitment to the mission of the Hispanic Federation is required 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google platforms 
  • Professional demeanor 
  • Fluency in Spanish, including the ability to read, speak, and write is a plus 
  • Fluency in social media platforms or using social media for advocacy is also a plus
