Summary of Job
Under the general direction of the Building Inspection Specialist, performs a wide range of diverse duties pertaining to a variety of building inspection services. This position requires sound judgment, initiative, and specialized knowledge in carrying out procedures, as well as applying laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Issues permits, collects fees, issues receipts, and provides assistance to the general public, contractors, developers, realtors, architects, and designers who visit, call, or write about building and construction services.
- Confers with planners, building inspectors, engineers, and staff on developmental plans, policies, specifications, or construction documents for compliance with City Ordinances, State Building Codes, and other regulations.
- Determines compliance with rules and regulations affecting accessory residential buildings and accessory structures.
- Ascertains whether or not proposed alterations and repairs conform to zoning requirements.
- Ascertains the need for State approval of commercial plans.
- Reviews applications for fence permits, retaining walls, decks, etc.
- Performs various reception/clerical activities, including greeting customers, answering telephones, processing mail, composing and typing letters and memoranda from general instructions, preparing agendas, and assisting with the preparation of contractor license applications, etc.
- Maintains computerized cash receipts and other records as required.
- Prepares invoices, collects fees, and issues licenses for Weights & Measures Program.
- Schedules appointments and processes paperwork/certificates for the Inspectors.
- Creates and maintains correspondence for the Housing/Nuisance/Code Enforcement Program.
- Assists with the City Development marketing efforts including the Department of Annual Report, Development Proposals and other marketing related items that the department undertakes.
- Responsible for assigned neighborhoods to act as a liaison between the neighborhood Association and the City.
- Participates in the Mayor’s Neighborhood Leadership Cabinet meetings and Neighborhood Revitalization meetings as necessary.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
Qualifications & Education
- Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in the Building Inspection Division.
- Proficiency with computers and programs, including Microsoft Office Products (MS Word, Excel, etc.).
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and to prepare and maintain accurate and complete reports and records.
- General knowledge of the laws, codes, principles, practices, methods, and techniques as applied and pertaining to the various aspects of building inspection, building code, code enforcement, zoning, planning, etc.
- Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the general public, property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and designers.
- Ability to answer a variety of questions and make appropriate referrals to inspectors and/or the division manager.
- Ability to establish and maintain efficient working relationships with City officials, boards and committees, and City staff.
- Ability to act, make decisions, and justify action based on rational thought, good judgment, and logical thought.
