Environmental Compliance Specialist

About This Role:

Supports environmental compliance and the management and disposal of hazardous materials. This position conducts or assists the Environmental Compliance Manager with the development and compliance assurance of environmental protection programs mandated as part of RCRA, TSCA, HMTA, Controlled Substances Act, CAA, CWA, and other environmental protection acts and related regulations. Manages hazardous materials and waste, conducts facility compliance inspections, and provides consultation and outreach to the campus. This position is part of a hazardous materials emergency response team that promptly addresses hazardous materials incidents on campus (during and after hours) and conducts related abatement activities.

  • Conduct, develop and update training and outreach materials on environmental compliance, hazardous materials, and waste management.
  • Prepare annual environmental reports for regulatory agencies.
  • Perform inspections of laboratories, classrooms, shops, and other institutional facilities for compliance assurance of hazardous waste management/storage requirements, chemical safety, environmental regulations, and institutional procedures.
  • Document compliance deficiencies in writing and/or in computer databases or software programs.
  • Calculate air emissions by review of technical specifications of source equipment, raw fuel/contaminant materials, pollution control equipment, and related regulatory criteria.
  • Collect, transport, segregate and characterize hazardous materials, hazardous waste, universal waste, and medical waste.
  • Bulk and transfer chemicals to a drum or lab pack.
  • Maintain hazardous materials and air emissions database.
  • Participate as part of the emergency response team and respond to hazardous materials spills and releases during and after hours.
  • Collect environmental media samples and determine appropriate sampling and analytical methods to assess the presence of contaminant levels.
  • Position may receive vaccinations to protect against infectious diseases related to their potential exposures, such as hepatitis.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, radiation, and potentially infectious materials.
  • Will use chemical incident response assessment instrumentation including but not limited to Photoionization Detector, 4/5 gas meters, combustible gas meter, mercury monitor, mercury vacuum. Will use environmental samplers or sampling equipment/devices.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, environmental science, chemistry, or related field
  • One to three years of directly related work experience in the management of hazardous materials/waste and or environmental compliance

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in environmental management, environmental science, chemistry or related field
  • CHMM certification
  • Previous work experience directly managing hazardous waste in an academic or research setting
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry principles and an understanding of other physical sciences. Understanding of the hazardous properties of chemicals and related adverse reactions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read and interpret written instructions, regulations, policies, procedures, and SOPs.
  • Good customer service skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact with others in a professional setting, remaining courteous even when faced with difficult situations and clients.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements of RCRA and DOT pertaining to the management and transport of hazardous materials
  • Demonstrated skills in hazardous materials management
  • Computer proficiency in PC environment – Microsoft Office (using internet browsers, Outlook, Word, Access databases, Excel spreadsheets, specialized database software).
  • Ability to use computerized data management systems
  • Familiarity with CWA and CAA regulations

 Other Requirements:
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and DOT 49CFR174 hazmat upon hire or within 90 days of hire
  • Requires a valid driver’s license
  • A pre-employment/post-offer physical and annual medical exam is required
  • Must be medically approved to wear respiratory protection in the form of negative or positive pressure respirators, including N95, half and/or full-face mask, SCBA, and PAPR
  • Ability to transport up to 50lbs
  • Push and pull full 55-gallon drums using a drum dolly or other mechanical aid

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:
  $39,780/annual to $61,649/annual
